January, the First Month of 2014

January, the first month of 2014 is coming to an end and what a great start we have had in Northeast Wisconsin! There have been abundant January birthdays, celebrations, and some nightly meetings warming us up in these extremely frigid and cold temperatures in Northeast Wisconsin. We have been experiencing an“arctic cold blast” in January having 20+ days below zero!

The month of January also celebrated the birthday of the“inspiring” Doctor Martin Luther King Junior who through his constant efforts, support, and struggles helped “free” the African American people as it should be! I remember growing up in Illinois outside of Chicago and one of my very good friends was a black boy; I could never understand all the hatred there was toward the black people. I also remember when I was a young lad in the fifties there always was a “huge” black man who would pick up the garbage cans by our garage and would hoist them on his shoulder and carry them to the truck week after week; my father at times would meet him in the yard and offer this giant of a man a glass of water.  A humble smile on the massive man’s face and a pleasant deep “thank you”was heard after he drank the water down and would continue on. I stood in awe, watched, and was totally astonished on how hard this humble man worked, hoisting these cans up on his shoulder, hauling them from the back yards, house after house, and block after block throughout the city!

I think of times like that and I thank God for people like Dr. Martin Luther King Junior, Mrs. Rosa Parks, President John F. Kennedy and many other courageous people that helped the Civil Rights Movement succeed! As was said by Dr. King with such great integrity, emotion, and enthusiasm – “Free At Last, Free At Last, Thank God We Are Free At Last!”
